MERAZZO TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION

MERAZZO HAS BEEN DEVELOPED FOLLOWING IT’S SUCCESS IN EUROPE

IT IS SUITABLE FOR INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL APPLICATIONS LARGE OR SMALL AND PROVIDES THE SPECIFIER WITH A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO PROVIDE A VERY ATTRACTIVE FLOOR FINISH COMBINED WITH THE PROVEN DURABILITY AND PERFORMANCE OF A MASTIC ASPHALT FLOOR.

MASTIC ASPHALT SPECIFICATION

1. The Mastic Asphalt shall conform to BS.6925:1998 Type F1076  Grade 2 or equivalent current European Standard for internal applications and BS. 1447. 1988 or BS EN 13108-6 the current European Standard for mastic asphalt paving i.e. external applications.

2.The aggregate content required is 50 per cent irrespective of the thickness laid (please refer to later note). This shall comprise granite sizes 3mm, 6mm, 10mm, 14mm single size with the larger size aggregate but a blend of sizes is acceptable. The use of marble stone is attractive but expensive and Spanish Marble is preferred for its hardness. (Hard aggregates are essential for subsequent surface grinding)

.N.B. 14mm is currently the maximum size aggregate that has been used successfully. Larger alternative aggregates may be acceptable but testing must be carried out prior to their use.

Mastic Asphalt Application

It is recommended that application thicknesses are as follows.

N.B.

ALL APPLICATIONS MUST BE SAND RUBBED.

Please note the 35mm application allows a 5mm grinding depth: finished overall thickness 40mm.

Heavy Duty Areas

Lay 10mm mastic asphalt on glass fibre tissue of either flooring or roofing material. This is followed by 35mm Merazzo (flooring or paving) at temperatures up to 220 °C. The material must be laid ensuring an even spread of aggregate i.e. avoiding aggregate settlement in buckets, etc. It is advisable to use a controlled gas gun to sufficiently warm the whole face of the joint.

Please note the 35mm application allows a 5mm grinding depth; finished overall thickness 40mm.

Light Duty Floors, etc.

The overall thickness can reduce to a minimum of 25-30mm - this can be applied without an underlay of mastic asphalt but should be laid on glass fiber tissue in the normal manner-aggregate content all as above. It is essential that laying as described above is followed with particular attention being paid to bay joints being properly made.

GRINDING, SANDING & POLISHING

Merazzo can be left with a natural finish after the grinding and sanding of the fillers.

Precaution

All machines must be used with dust extractors and all operatives must wear protective clothing (boiler suits) and dust masks.

Grinding

Sanding

Polishing

1. The first grinding process is best achieved using tungsten turbo grinding cups as opposed to discs (please refer to details of cups/discs under "equipment required".

2. Various grit size sanding and diamond discs may be used for final finishes.

3. The grinding operation should be carried out with an Omega 700 machine quite aggressively! Save the dust from the first grind; mix the dust with a Unibond adhesive - 50 per cent mix. Use this to trowel on to the surface filling all voids. Ensure this is worked into the surface. It is recommended that two coats are applied; the second coat being laid one hour after the first coat. The filler must then be left for a minimum

4. The sanding of the filled floor surface should be carried out using an FTR 410 grinding/sanding/polishing machine with 80 grit orbital pads to clear the filler from the surface. It is essential that all the voids are filled; if not, use the filler as required in the isolated areas - this will dry within an hour, re-sand the surface.

5. Vacuum all dust from the floor surface then use the FTR 410 with 100 grade grit pads to remove any surface blemishes.

6. Thoroughly wash the surface with cold water using a mild detergent then rinse and squeegee dry.

7. The clean surface can then be

polished using the FTR 410 machine with Velcro-backed 100-200 diamond pads. Lightly spray the surface with cold water to wet-polish. Squeegee in between polishing to inspect the surface.

8. Thoroughly clean with cold water and squeegee surface; allow to dry completely.

9. To enhance the floor finish, apply 2 coats of Stoneglo polish with a mop applicator, allowing it to dry between coats. For paving or a buff finish, apply one thin coat of Stoneglo polish wiped over thinly with a fine cloth; the cloth must be just damp with the polish.

Installation Process

Merazzo Flooring offers a unique blend of beauty and durability. The installation process is crucial to ensure a flawless finish. This guide will walk you through the essential steps to achieve professional results.

Maintenance Tips

Merazzo Flooring is a popular choice for its stunning appearance and durability. To keep it looking pristine, proper maintenance is crucial. Here are some tips to maintain your Merazzo flooring. They will keep it in top condition for years to come.

Regular Cleaning Techniques

Regular cleaning of Merazzo flooring is essential to maintain its shine and longevity. Daily sweeping or vacuuming helps to remove dirt and debris that can scratch the surface. For best results, follow these simple steps:

  • Use a soft-bristle broom or a vacuum cleaner with a hard floor setting.

  • Mop the floor with a damp mop and a pH-neutral cleaner.

  • Avoid using harsh chemicals, as they can damage the finish.

  • Dry the floor with a soft cloth to prevent water spots.

Preventive Maintenance Measures

Preventive measures help to protect Merazzo flooring from damage and extend its lifespan. Place mats at entryways to reduce dirt and moisture from being tracked in. Use furniture pads under heavy furniture to prevent scratches and dents. Follow these additional tips:

  1. Avoid dragging furniture across the floor.

  2. Wipe up spills immediately to prevent staining.

  3. Use rugs in high-traffic areas to reduce wear and tear.

  4. Rotate rugs periodically to ensure even wear.

Cost Considerations

Merazzo Flooring offers a stylish and durable option for homes and businesses. The cost of Merazzo Flooring can vary due to several factors. Considering costs helps make informed decisions and stay within budget.

Factors Affecting Cost

The cost of Merazzo Flooring depends on various factors. Material quality plays a significant role. Higher-quality materials will cost more, but they offer better durability and aesthetics. Installation complexity also impacts cost. More complex designs and larger areas need more labour, which increases expenses. Geographical location affects prices due to local labour rates and material availability.

Another factor is brand reputation. Well-known brands often charge a premium for their products. Customisation options like patterns, colours, and finishes can add to the cost. Maintenance requirements also play a role. Some Merazzo Flooring types need special cleaning products and treatments. These can raise long-term costs.

Budget-friendly Alternatives

For those seeking cost-effective options, there are several alternatives to Merazzo Flooring. Vinyl flooring mimics the look of Merazzo at a fraction of the cost. It's easy to install and care for. This makes it a popular choice for budget-conscious homeowners.

Laminate flooring is another alternative. It offers a similar appearance and is durable. Laminate can be a good option for high-traffic areas. Ceramic tiles also provide a stylish look and are less expensive than Merazzo. They come in various designs and are easy to clean.

Consider using engineered stone. It combines natural stone and resin, providing a durable yet affordable option. Concrete flooring with decorative finishes can also replicate the look of Merazzo at a lower cost. It is highly durable and suitable for various settings.

  • Vinyl Flooring: Budget-friendly, easy to install

  • Laminate Flooring: Durable, high-traffic areas

  • Ceramic Tiles: Stylish, easy to clean

  • Engineered Stone: Durable, affordable

  • Concrete Flooring: Decorative finishes, lower cost
